L. W. Surratt Obituary (1930 - 2016)

L.W. served his country in the U.S. Navy from 1948-1953 where he attained the designation of Boatswain. After his discharge, he was employed by Community Public Service Company, now known as TNMP, for 38 years, until his retirement in 1992 as district line foreman. During 20 of those years, he enjoyed shrimping in Galveston Bay on weekends. On April 10, 1992, the date of his retirement, Texas City Mayor Charles T. Doyle and the Texas City Commissioners issued a proclamation marking 'L.W. Surratt Day' in Texas City. The proclamation noted his tireless efforts on behalf of the city and its residents during times of need in his capacity at Texas-New Mexico Power Company. L.W. loved all sports and coached both Little League baseball and football for several years. In his early years, he played fast pitch softball with his longtime friend, Jimmy Hayley. Upon retirement, golf became his passion and he was seen on the links at least three times a week. When not playing golf, he was often found drinking early morning coffee at Texas City Feed and Supply or McDonald's. A chance meeting in 2000 reunited L.W. with his old friend Jimmy Hayley. That meeting led to some of the best sixteen years of his life; volunteering for the Texas City-La Marque Chamber of Commerce. Those volunteer opportunities at the Chamber then afforded L.W. to use his skills for many other entities where he and Hazel made many wonderful friends. He received numerous awards during his lifetime of service, but two of the ones that made him proudest were when he and Hazel were honored together. In 2010, Amoco Federal Credit Union named L.W. and Hazel as 'Members of the Year.' Then in 2013, the Texas City-La Marque Chamber of Commerce honored the couple as 'Citizens of the Year.' He loved to travel and did so extensively; making memories for Hazel and he to cherish. Thanks to family and friends for 85 years! A special thanks to Drs. Janice Gulde Fowler and Dhatri Kodali, whom he considered, along with his many friends, as his extended family. Also, a special thank you to the nurses and staff at Deke Slayton Oncology and Dr. Sidd Acharya and his staff. Services will be held at Carnes Funeral Home in Texas City on Monday, August 29, 2016 with Dr. Robert Miller officiating. Viewing will be from 5:00pm-7:00pm with a memorial service at 7:00pm.
